A natural fluorite weighing 17.95 carats cut as an oval, from Pakistan. Hand-selected for colour and life rather than paper grades. At Mohs 4 fluorite is a display and pendant stone rather than a ring stone.
Its appeal is colour banding and the fact that it can be cut in very large sizes with remarkable clarity for a fraction of the cost of any hard gem. Care. Soft and cleavable in four directions.
Handle as a collector or display stone. Never ultrasonic. Keep from knocks and from direct sunlight.
Treatment. Untreated. Some material is coated, which should be disclosed.
Ships from Peshawar, Pakistan. Dispatched within 1–3 working days, tracked and insured. Free worldwide over $500.
Returns. 30 days, unworn and in original packaging. Custom-set jewellery is excluded.
At Mohs 4 fluorite is a display and pendant stone rather than a ring stone. Its appeal is colour banding and the fact that it can be cut in very large sizes with remarkable clarity for a fraction of the cost of any hard gem.
Value is driven by: Colour zoning and vividness, size, cut quality.
Soft and cleavable in four directions. Handle as a collector or display stone. Never ultrasonic. Keep from knocks and from direct sunlight.
It is not recommended for daily wear. At Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, fluorite scratches against ordinary dust and can cleave on impact. It performs best in pendants, earrings and display settings.
Fluorite forms in large, clean, well-coloured crystals in many localities. Its softness limits jewellery demand, so beautiful 15-20 carat stones remain affordable.
Many fluorites fluoresce blue or violet under UV light, the phenomenon of fluorescence is literally named after this mineral.
