Common questions
Can fluorite be set in a ring?
It is not recommended for daily wear. At Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, fluorite scratches against ordinary dust and can cleave on impact. It performs best in pendants, earrings and display settings.
Why is fluorite so inexpensive for its size?
Fluorite forms in large, clean, well-coloured crystals in many localities. Its softness limits jewellery demand, so beautiful 15-20 carat stones remain affordable.
Does fluorite glow?
Many fluorites fluoresce blue or violet under UV light, the phenomenon of fluorescence is literally named after this mineral.
